The First Boys Cheerleading Squad Takes on the Girls
Despite teasing and gossip, the boys from the DAZL Diamonds Peewee Boyz cheerleading squad from Middleton, south Leeds, are training to win the championship trophy in the BCA Northern Classics in Blackpool on November 15.
The squad is made up of eight boys who range in age from six to 12. All of the boys are from inner-city deprived areas so they are given this opportunity and their families can join together to raise money for it at the same time.
While they have already taken home a third place trophy at the British Cheerleading Association (BCA) international championships, they boys are still a little intimidated by the girls they will face. One said, ”It can be quite scary actually because girls are more flexible than boys.”

Dance with a bite
Last night the 14 finalists competed on So You Think You Can Dance for what to them is the ultimate dance award – to be crowned ‘America’s Favorite Dancer’. But their journey has prizes along the way, including doing mind blowing dances choreographed by some of the most remarkable and talented choreographers in the world. All styles are featured on the show and these dancers seem to know they are getting the opportunity of a lifetime. Professional dancers can spend their whole career in the pursuit of performing such an array of pieces form these gifted choreographers and never get the chance.
Among the most notable of last night’s performances was watching Kupono and Kayla dance to Sonya Meyer’s vampire inspired creation. From the dark and piercing make up to the totally vamp, yet dancer-worthy costuming work the dance was stunning. Kayla expressed that in the piece, “I’m pulling away from death and Kupono’s trying to pull me towards it.”
Choreographer Sonya Meyer set the dance to a song form the recent vampire movie break-away hit Twilight – using the song Eyes on Fire by Blue Foundation. When asked about her creation she said, “We are doing some dark, dark stuff.” It was dark, beautiful and seamless… and the judges and the crowd all got bit by it.
